PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the provision of professional nursing services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of a higher level nursing professional.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training to perform the tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Nurse; 
  • Receives training in agency nursing protocols, personnel policies, program guidelines and legal reporting requirements; 
  • Receives training in and is given progressively complex assignments involving nursing services; 
  • Makes rounds and gives direct care; 
  • Takes and records vital signs; 
  • Carries out physicians orders regarding diet, medication and treatment; 
  • Changes dressings; 
  • Checks and distributes controlled drugs; 
  • Maintains availability of drugs and supplies; 
  • Observes adequacy of housekeeping and maintenance services; 
  • Performs first aid and alerts physicians to emergency conditions; 
  • Records observations of physical and physiological status and actions taken; 
  • Confers with nurses and physicians on other shifts regarding condition of individuals; 
  • Assesses individuals medical psychosocial needs; 
  • Works collaboratively with members of an interdisciplinary team in planning direct care; 
  • Protects human and civil rights of individuals and staff; 
  • Educates individuals and their families towards an awareness and understanding of health and illness; 
  • May participate in outpatient clinics and assist in physical examinations and histories; may administer EKG and eye examinations; 
  • May participate in bathing and feeding of individuals; 
  • May assist in design and collection of data for research projects; 
  • May serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited nursing program.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain patients/clients; may have exposure to disagreeable conditions, communicable and/or infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive patients/clients.

APPOINTMENT

This class is intended to permit agencies to recruit and train recent graduates of nursing programs for the class of Nurse. Appointment to this class may not exceed ninety (90) days following graduation from a nursing program.
