PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state childcare facility or program this class is accountable for performing basic duties concerning the proper care and security of residents.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of a Children Services Supervisor or other employee of higher grade; may work more independently with acquired experience.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Generally does not exercise supervision.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Serves as role model of appropriate behavior for residents to follow;
- Performs and/or directs residents in maintenance of living quarters (dusting, washing, waxing, vacuuming, etc.);
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions to improve treatment and/or therapy skills;
- Writes individual reports of significant happenings in unit, e.g., runaway reports, incident reports, accident reports;
- Oversees daily living activities to ensure proper care of residents, e.g., overseeing awakening, sleeping, eating, dressing, bathing, physical hygiene and general health;
- Upholds security practices of institution, e.g., nightly bell system, locking of unit, checking of fire extinguishers, etc.;
- Takes periodic count of residents to ensure all accounted for;
- Enforces rules and regulations of the institution in unit;
- Participates in social or recreational activities;
- Performs related duties as required.

- communicate with and motivate clients to participate in tasks, programs, unit maintenance, etc.;

- work under stress and remain calm in difficult situations;
- understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- understand and implement rules and regulations;
- Willingness to learn.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
High school graduation or equivalent including experience and/or training that could be expected to provide the required abilities listed above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and/or restrain residents and may have significant exposure to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive residents.
