PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut Health Center this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the maintenance and supply of operating room/anesthesia equipment and for assisting the anesthesia staff in the care of surgical patients.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Sets up and keeps operating room equipment and carts stocked to appropriate levels; 
  • Rotates sterile items which may be in storage; 
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area including all operating room/anesthetizing locations; 
  • Decontaminates equipment and replenishes carts to prepare rooms after surgery; 
  • Ensures all equipment is kept clean; 
  • Prepares equipment for decontamination and/or sterilization as needed; 
  • Ensures sterile items are not outdated; 
  • Tests anesthesia equipment to determine proper functioning; 
  • Assists operating room personnel in setting up equipment; 
  • Distributes drugs to various locations; 
  • Assists anesthesia/operating room staff by transporting blood samples and/or other specimens to appropriate laboratories; 
  • Retrieves needed items while operative procedures are in progress; 
  • Locates and retrieves equipment from other areas of hospital; 
  • Prepares broken equipment for repair by clinical engineering; 
  • Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of basic hospital practices (i.e., aseptic techniques, lifting techniques and medical terminology);

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience working in a hospital or nursing home setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Completion of a formalized training program for Certified Nursing Aide/Assistant may be substituted for six (6) months of the General Experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate degree of environmental discomfort from exposure to operating room odors and human specimens and may be exposed to a moderate degree of physical discomfort from walking, standing, bending, lifting and moving equipment.
