PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Consumer Protection, Food and Standards Division this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in maintenance of the Division laboratory.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Consumer Protection Division Director or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead/supervise Field Inspectors during field projects.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Maintains the accreditation and certification of the State's Metrology Laboratory by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST);
- Establishes a quality control program for the state's physical standards;
- Updates and analyzes process control charts;
- Performs laboratory procedures involving the calibration of laboratory and field standards of mass, volume, length and temperature and makes other precise determination of mass, volume, length and temperature for business and industries;
- Performs mathematical corrections for standards involving air buoyancy, thermal expansion of materials, temperature, humidity and pressure as required;
- Makes recommendations for the approval, modification, or rejection of weighing and measuring devices sold or used in Connecticut;
- Weighs or measures contents of official samples of pre-packaged merchandise;
- Instructs Field Inspectors in the area of quality control, care and use of standards, safety, laws and regulations;
- Conducts special tests on commercial weighing and measuring equipment;
- Develops a promotional program to identify and meet measurement capabilities throughout the State;
- Consults with business, industry, and the NIST on technical matters of measurement;
- Prepares talks and informational releases on technical aspects of precise measurements;
- Answers inquiries pertaining to activities of the weights and measures laboratory;
- Prepares reports of tests, examinations and monthly statistics;
- Performs routine maintenance to analytical balances and precision equipment;
- May testify in court;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in the area of metrology, analytical laboratory or quality control work in a technical setting.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in the physical sciences, mathematics or engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
- The classification of Consumer Protection Metrologist is assigned to Salary Group LS 21a.
- Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group LS 22.
- The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan IE in CORE-CT.
