PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Correction this class is accountable for providing paraprofessional medical care to inmate patients and assisting in their custody and care.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Initially works under the close supervision of a physician, advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), physician’s assistant, registered nurse or an official of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Provides paraprofessional medical care to inmate patients;
  • Applies first aid, casts and dressings;
  • Conducts basic physical examinations;
  • Draws blood;
  • Maintains custody of patient inmates and assists in their care;
  • Assists in daily sick call;
  • Screens inmate requests;
  • Schedules appointments and refers medical problems beyond their capabilities to attending medical staff;
  • Assists doctors or nurses in care of inmate patients;
  • Keeps records and makes reports; orders supplies and equipment;
  • Assists correctional officers as needed;
  • May distribute medication; 
  • May conduct intake interviews for newly admitted inmate’s medical histories;
  • May serve as part of the facility emergency response team;
  • May assist custody and provide escort service to patients in emergencies;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of paramedicine, patient care and first aid;
  • Considerable

  • Ability to perform under stress.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience as a licensed paramedic in the State of Connecticut.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have reached their 21st birthday. 
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess general good health and retain sufficient strength, stamina, agility and visual and auditory acuity to perform all the duties of the class. Incumbents will be required to pass a physical examination.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the significant stress of confinement within a dangerous and volatile prison population; may be exposed to considerable danger of injury or assault by inmates.
