PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Correction, District North or District South warehouse this class is accountable for supervising a staff of Stores Supervisors and inmates engaged in warehouse activities and operations.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This is a supervisory level class. There will be one (1) Correctional Stores District Supervisor assigned to the District North warehouse and two (2) Correctional Stores District Supervisors assigned to the District South warehouse.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Correctional Stores Supervisors and assigned inmates.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of warehouse staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans warehouse work; 
  • Establishes and maintains warehouse procedures; 
  • Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; 
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Assumes responsibility for requisitions, receipt, inspection, inventory control, storage and issue of requested supplies and materials; 
  • Plans, outlines and schedules work of subordinate supervisors and inmates; 
  • Consults with department heads, vendors and Procurement Services officials concerning requisition and specification for supplies, materials and equipment; 
  • Utilizes computer purchasing and inventory system; 
  • Assists in preparation of budget estimates; 
  • Maintains discipline, security and safety measures within storage area; 
  • Supervises instruction of inmates in methods and techniques of storekeeping operations; 
  • Supervises Correction Officers assigned to custodial duty in area; 
  • May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies; 
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • relevant agency policies and procedures; 
    • relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; 
    • modern principles and practices of efficient warehousing; 
    • modern techniques of stock records and inventory control; 
  • Knowledge of modern objectives, practices and policies relating to inmate work in penal institutions; 
  • Considerable

  • Considerable ability to keep records and make reports; 
  • Ability to
    • work under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; 
    • utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the storage, record keeping and distribution of stores and materials, preferably in a correctional setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been with responsibility for supervising either the entire small to moderate function as a working supervisor or for running one or several phases of a large stores function.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Correctional Stores Supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  • A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates.
