PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for performing quick and accurate operation of data entry equipment involving a variety of repetitive and system prompted data entry functions.
GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE
This class is reserved for positions where at least seventy percent (70%) of the duties must involve entry of information on computer terminals or personal computers. Incumbents are subject to demanding production standards.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Data Entry Supervisor or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level employees.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Operates data entry equipment with alphabetic and numeric keyboard;
- Enters, verifies, updates, corrects and retrieves information;
- Enters information with speed and accuracy;
- Keys in job parameters;
- Programs data entry equipment;
- Sets up equipment;
- Batches forms or prepares information for data entry or distribution;
- Codes or corrects coding of information;
- Maintains files of source documents or storage media;
- Recognizes machine or operator errors and takes corrective action;
- May operate other data entry or related equipment;
- May keep incident reports or record of work completed;
- May instruct others in procedures and equipment operation;
- May perform clerical duties;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Oral communication skills;
- Ability to
- operate a computer terminal and related equipment with considerable speed and accuracy;
- follow written and oral instructions;
- Clerical ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) months of data entry experience.
NOTE:
- Operation of a terminal designed for cash receipt/register or other similar specialized purposes does not qualify. Use of equipment for inquiry purposes cannot be substituted for the General Experience.
- Part-time experience in the entry of information on designated data entry equipment is calculated on the basis of 1044 hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience. Verification by employer may be required prior to appointment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Completion of an intensive data processing training course which must have included courses in data entry operations may be substituted for the General Experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some discomfort from working in tiring positions for extended periods of time and from meeting demanding production standards.
