PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the University of Connecticut Health Center dental laboratories this class is accountable for performing technical work in the construction and repair of dental prosthetic appliances on prescription of a licensed dentist.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Director of the Dental Prosthetic Laboratory, licensed dentist or another professional of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead student interns, new employees and other employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Prepares metal and other composition dentures, both full and partial, from impressions taken by a licensed dentist, skillfully preserving borders and integrity of clasps and of denture teeth;
- Constructs metal clasps;
- Inlays crowns, bridgework and appliances for orthodontics and periodontics according to specifications;
- Repairs dental prosthetic appliances;
- Keeps laboratory clean and equipment in good working order;
- With experience may specialize in one technical area (e.g. ceramics, fixed appliances, removable appliances, etc.);
- May keep records of supplies and products manufactured;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- dental or oral anatomy with normal and abnormal variations thereof at a paraprofessional and technical level;
- practices, processes and material used in restorative dentistry;
- Skills
- mechanical and artistic skill and judgment in manufacture of dental laboratory products;
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in dental laboratory technology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- Successful completion of a one (1) year training program in dental laboratory technology may be substituted for the General Experience.
- Successful completion of the Certified Dental Technician (CDT) examination offered by the National Board for Certification of Dental Technicians may be substituted for the General Experience.
