PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is used as the advanced placement level of a structured development program designed to prepare incumbents for opportunities in transportation related careers. This class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in construction and maintenance skill sets.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under the close supervision of employees of higher grade to whom the on-the-job training or supervision has been delegated.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Continues to receive on-the-job training to perform advanced tasks including, commercial vehicle operation, construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, or bridges; 
  • Receives on-the-job training to supplement prior vocational or technical training and work experience;
  • Through on-the-job training and classes continues to learn and applies the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades; 
  • Continues to learn and applies safety protocols; 
  • Performs increasingly difficult and skilled tasks requiring application of learned highway and road maintenance skills including, construction maintenance, flagging, traffic control, routine mechanical repair and maintenance, equipment/vehicle operation and maintenance, minor repair work, landscaping, wildlife hazard control, preventive maintenance, removal of debris and dangerous items from roadways; 
  • Assists with installation of guardrails and highway barriers; 
  • Assists in snow removal operations; 
  • Performs duties related to similar trade areas as required; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Apprentices must successfully complete 26 weeks of on the job and classroom training as a Transportation Maintainer Apprentice 1 and possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License with the tank endorsement, and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC), to be eligible for placement into this classification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination, including drug testing, will be required prior to hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.

APPOINTMENT

Permanent status cannot be attained while working in this classification.
