PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for performing the most complex tasks in planning and administering the conservation education and hunting safety programs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises Environmental Protection Safety Representatives, clerical staff and seasonal and volunteer instructors as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs the most complex duties in the area of conservation education and hunting safety;
- Plans, coordinates and monitors training programs;
- Develops curriculum goals and objectives;
- Supervises the recruitment and training of volunteer instructors;
- Develops and implements a statewide system for compiling, maintaining and evaluating data on hunting accidents;
- Conducts rifle range surveys;
- Plans, evaluates and supervises rifle-range construction, maintenance and safety;
- Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials and speaks before groups and the media regarding conservation education and firearms safety;
- Prepares reports and correspondence;
- Maintains records;
- Prepares program budget;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- the principles and practices of wildlife management;
- outdoor safety techniques;
- principles and practices of training and educational methods and techniques;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Seven (7) years of experience in conservation education and hunter safety training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in training at the level of an Environmental Protection Safety Representative (Firearms).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class will be required to retain and maintain appropriate hunter instructor certification issued by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury from handling firearms.
