PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involving executing detail design work and assisting in the review of plans and specifications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Design Engineer 3 or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Prepares analyses of designs for highway illumination, traffic signals and traffic control devices, electrical plant equipment, low and high power distribution systems and other types of electrical and electronic projects; 
  • Prepares plans and specifications under direction of an engineer of higher grade; 
  • Consults with contracting engineers and construction personnel on electrical engineering problems; 
  • Checks shop drawings; 
  • Reviews plans prepared by outside engineers; 
  • Makes economic analyses of projects; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of electrical engineering design; 
  • Knowledge of
    • electrical engineering aspects of highway illumination, interior illumination, and power distribution; 
    • electrical engineering aspects of highway and building construction including materials; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability in engineering design of large electrical projects; 
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in electrical construction engineering.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in the design of complex electrical projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of personal injury or physical harm from construction site environments and some discomfort from year round weather conditions.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

  • The classification of Design Engineer 2 is assigned to Salary Group LS 22a.
  • Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group LS 23.
  • The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan IE in CORE-CT.
