PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involving executing detail design work and assisting in the review of plans and specifications.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Design Engineer 3 or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Prepares analyses and designs for buildings and other types of structural engineering projects;
- Prepares plans and specifications under direction of a Design Engineer 3;
- Consults with Building Plan Reviewers and Construction Supervisors on engineering problems in field;
- Checks shop drawings;
- Reviews plans prepared by outside engineers;
- Makes economic analyses of projects;
- May perform energy audits;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of structural engineering design;
- Knowledge of engineering aspects of building construction including materials;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in structural engineering.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in engineering design on large scale building projects.
NOTE: Large scale building projects will be interpreted as buildings exceeding 12,000 square feet in size and more than one story in height not including apartment buildings and single family residences.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of personal injury or physical harm from construction site environments and some discomfort from year round weather conditions.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
- The classification of Design Engineer 2 is assigned to Salary Group FS 22a.
- Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group FS 23.
- The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan FE in CORE-CT.
