PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Labor this class is accountable for directing functions of the Occupational Safety and Health.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives executive direction from the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directs staff of the division.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Directs staff and operations of the Occupational Safety and Health and Working Conditions Divisions;
- Coordinates, plans and manages functions of Connecticut Occupational Safety and Health Act providing consultation, education and training services for public and private employers;
- Prepares proposed regulations and amendments to Connecticut Occupational Safety and Health Act and other labor laws covered by division;
- Assists in preparation of division and state budgets;
- Directs inspection of public sector employers for compliance with State Occupational Safety and Health Act and standards;
- Issues citations and assesses monetary penalties for violations;
- Coordinates State Occupational Safety and Health program with requirements and directives of United States Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration;
- Prepares federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration grants;
- Prepares special reports and correspondence;
- Conducts public speaking as required;
- Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Ten (10) years of experience in occupational safety and health.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have included supervisory or advanced technical experience in occupational safety and health.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training in occupational health or safety, chemistry, mechanical engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Masters' degree in business administration, public administration or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
