PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for directing a comprehensive rehabilitation therapy program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative direction from an administrative official of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directs a large rehabilitation therapy staff assigned to the program.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Directs staff and operations of the rehabilitation therapy program;
- Coordinates, plans and manages program activities;
- Formulates program goals and objectives;
- Develops or assists in development of related policy;
- Interprets and administers pertinent laws;
- Evaluates staff;
- Prepares or assists in preparation of program budget;
- Maintains contact with individuals within and outside of program who might impact on program activities;
- Recruits staff;
- Prepares administrative reports and grant applications;
- Establishes objectives of continuing education and student programs;
- Coordinates rehabilitation therapy treatment programs and objectives to ensure consistency with overall client treatment plan;
- Supervises maintenance, scheduling, inventory, rules and conduct, repair and safety checks of assigned large indoor and outdoor facilities, buildings and other structures related to rehabilitation therapy programs;
- Develops and supervises research projects;
- Orders and distributes equipment and supplies for department;
- Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
- May attend, participate in and chair interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary committees;
- May provide treatment to a limited number of clients;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- principles and practices of rehabilitation therapy;
- anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, neurology, neuroanatomy and individual and group dynamics as applied to rehabilitation therapy;
- Knowledge of
- and ability to apply management principles and practices;
- community services;
- Considerable
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in the supervision of professional therapists or programmatic and administrative responsibility for a therapy program at the level of an Occupational Therapy Supervisor, a Physical Therapy Supervisor or a Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 1.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class, if required to provide direct occupational or physical therapeutic treatment to clients, must be registered as a licensed Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist in the State of Connecticut or possess a temporary permit to practice Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy at the time of appointment.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a certificate in life saving from the American Red Cross.
