PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Police or Fire Academy this class is accountable for the after hour or evening welfare, safety and education of Municipal Police or Fire Recruits residing at the facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a Director or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads students and other employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinates and supervises the evening Basic Recruit Officer training activities; 
  • Develops room assignments; 
  • Instructs recruits in proper firearms techniques and fire safety procedures; 
  • Administers examinations; 
  • Conducts classroom activities including presentation of films, lectures, demonstrations, simulations and case studies; 
  • Operates live fire training scenarios; 
  • Acts as a counselor to recruits; 
  • Patrols dormitory area to ensure safety and security when trainees are in residence; 
  • Enforces agency rules and regulations regarding recruits; 
  • Approves and/or denies student release from dormitory; 
  • Regulates trainee behavior; 
  • Issues first incident disciplinary actions for inappropriate behavior; 
  • Writes incident reports and conducts investigations; 
  • Addresses emergency situations as needed; 
  • Reports all infractions of rules and regulations to Assistant Director of Basic Training or Director of Fire Training; 
  • Performs inspection of trainees and their quarters; 
  • Escorts recruits to breakfast following inspection; 
  • May coordinate activities of adjunct staff engaged in practical skills instructions at night; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; 
  • Knowledge of
    • relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; 
    • counseling methods and techniques; 
    • inspection and investigation methods and techniques; 
    • first aid practices and procedures; 
    • existing training materials including audio-visual aids; 
  • Considerable
    • oral and written communication skills; 
    • interpersonal skills; 
  • Ability to address emergency situations; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, military training, fire service or fire service training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class are required to work four (4) ten hour shifts during evening hours.
  • Incumbents in this class at the Police Academy must have been in a military environment as a commissioned or non-commissioned officer or in a police training environment with responsibility for overseeing the activities of a military basic training function or program.
  • Incumbents in this class at the Connecticut Fire Training Academy must have been in a fire service environment as a Fire Officer or in a fire training environment with responsibility for overseeing the activities of a fire service training function or program.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and retain a Standard First Aid certificate and/or CPR certificate.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
