PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involved in installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing electronic and electro-mechanical equipment such as two-way radios, scientific electronic equipment, traffic signal equipment and other electronic devices.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Lead Electronics Technician or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead Electronics Technicians in the same or lower grade or other personnel as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Installs, maintains, tests and repairs two-way mobile and base station radio equipment, traffic radar, audio and video recorders, closed circuit television, alarms, intercom, public address systems, computer equipment and other electronic equipment containing transistors, integrated circuits, microprocessor units, circuit boards and other digital components; 
  • Installs, maintains, tests and repairs electronic equipment such as scientific equipment and electro-mechanical equipment; 
  • Fabricates and sets lighting patterns of traffic signal control boxes according to plans; 
  • Monitors, tests, maintains and repairs traffic signal control components; 
  • Maintains auxiliary standby power equipment; 
  • Uses electronic laboratory standards and other test equipment to make measurements and tests as required by Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations; 
  • Maintains, repairs and calibrates electronic test equipment; 
  • Keeps records and prepares reports; 
  • Performs related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of electronic equipment; 
    • Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations where applicable; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to
    • read and interpret instruction manuals and schematic and wiring diagrams; 
    • install and operate electronic equipment; 
    • locate and repair defects in electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and devices using analog, digital and logic functions;
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and servicing of electronic equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in electronics or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession of a license for the repair of radio equipment at time of appointment.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to attend technical seminars or schools.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to high voltage electricity; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions if required to work outside.
