PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the immediate supervision of an engineer of higher grade to whom on-the-job training or supervision has been delegated.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods;
- Skill in the use of drafting and calculating instruments;
- Considerable ability to perform mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details;
- Ability to utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.
APPOINTMENT
Prior to appointment to this class there must be an approved designated class within the bargaining unit identified to which the incumbent will be appointed upon successful completion of an approved development program.
The length of the development program is determined by the experience and training requirements of the designated class and the prior experience of the incumbent. At the completion of the development program incumbents must meet the experience and training requirements of the designated class. The program cannot be less than one (1) year and cannot exceed three (3) calendar years in accordance with C.G.S. 5-234.
Incumbents in this class will be eligible for reclassification to the designated class without competitive examination upon successful completion of the development program and satisfactory service.
All appointments to this class shall be under terms of a development program and in accordance with a time schedule approved by the Commissioner of Administrative Services. All development programs must be approved by the Department of Administrative Services prior to appointment to this class.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
- Upon initial entry to this class, incumbents will be placed in Salary Group FS 18, Step 5.
- Upon successful completion of one year in this class, incumbents will be placed in Salary Group FS 18, Step 7.
