PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for independently performing as a rodperson or chainperson and relief instrument person; assists in and performs land records research, field investigations, calculations and more advanced plotting/drafting functions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of an Environmental Engineer or other employee of higher grade; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead lower level Engineering Aides, clerical and field support employees.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Serves as rodperson or chainperson and relief instrument person in a survey crew;
  • Performs and may lead the setting of stakes, clearing of survey lines, setting of property corners, locating of right of way and boundary markers, and related functions;
  • Makes adjustments to and maintains instruments in proper working condition including cleaning and oiling;
  • Assists in and performs land records research and field investigation to determine boundaries;
  • Evaluates, reduces and plots field notes;
  • Performs calculations involving traverses and boundary information;
  • Plots boundary information and drafts survey maps;
  • May prepare reports and correspondence;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of basic surveying principles, methods and equipment;

    • perform mathematical computations involving the use of trigonometry;
    • prepare, read and interpret maps, diagrams, profiles, graphs, charts and cross sections;
    • maintain records;
    • follow oral and written instructions;
    • use and adjust engineer's transit and level and to use measuring tapes and level rod;
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in field or office engineering work involving survey work, field data collection and calculations and/or mechanical drawing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from high school or possession of General Educational Development (GED) certification with courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry or mechanical drawing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from survey/engineering environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year-round weather conditions.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

  • The classification of Environmental Protection Engineering Aide 2 is assigned to Salary Group FS 13a.
  • Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group FS 14.
  • The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan FE in CORE-CT.
