PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for supervising staff engaged in the development, operations and programs of an Environmental Education and Interpretive Service Center.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from an Environmental Protection Supervisor of Education or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises professional, technical and clerical staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff;
- Provides staff training and assistance;
- Conducts performance evaluations;
- Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards;
- Develops and administers overall programs, objectives and guidelines;
- Supervises the planning, development and implementation of in service workshops, continuing educational programs and interpretive programs for the general public;
- Reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations on management plans and prospectus proposals related to environmental education and interpretation;
- Directs the daily activities of the center;
- Establishes and maintains close liaison with local, state and federal conservation agencies, environmental organizations, schools, civic organizations, businesses and the public concerned with natural resources, conservation and environmental education;
- Prepares and makes recommendations on budgetary requirements for the center;
- Develops exhibits and informative material for use through the center's programs and services;
- Conducts lectures and demonstrations;
- Prepares reports and correspondence;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- principles and practices in operations, management and implementation of an environmental education and interpretive program;
- principles and practices applied in planning and conducting a public relations program for an environmental education center;
- environmental problems, their issues and solutions to these problems;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Eight (8) years of experience in the field of environmental science, natural resources or environmental education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in planning and implementing environmental or natural resource center programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
A Bachelor's degree in environmental education, environmental science or natural resources may be substituted for four (4) years of the General Experience.
