PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for supervising a staff responsible for performing a range of complex assignments dealing with a division's field operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises professional and technical employees, Qualified Craft Workers, Environmental Protection Maintainers and other staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff;
  • Provides staff training and assistance;
  • Conducts performance evaluations;
  • Determines priorities and plans area work;
  • Establishes and maintains area procedures;
  • Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards;
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding policies and procedures;
  • Prepares reports and correspondence including reports on use and condition of facilities;
  • Supervises development and maintenance projects on state-owned facilities and land including parks, forests, wildlife management areas, recreation facilities and hatcheries;
  • Analyzes maintenance operations and programs and recommends changes;
  • Coordinates utilization of equipment and personnel;
  • Oversees special programs;
  • Acts as a department representative;
  • May assist in preparation of land acquisition, use and development plans;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • relevant agency policies and procedures;
    • relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations;
    • the principles and practices of facility, park and recreation area operation and maintenance;
    • the methods, materials and equipment in construction, maintenance, operation and repair of building equipment and grounds;

    • initiate and oversee projects;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of experience in operation, development, and maintenance of natural resources programs and facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training in the areas of civil engineering or natural resources management may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in civil engineering or natural resources management may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
