PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for supervising agency wide educational programs including education and publication outreach programs, teacher workshops, curriculum development, research and development.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from an Energy and Environmental Protection Division Director or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises professional, technical and clerical staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff;
- Provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations;
- Determines priorities and supervises the development of environmental education programs;
- Establishes and maintains unit procedures;
- Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards;
- Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- Prepares reports;
- Conducts environmental in-service workshops statewide to teachers;
- Conducts environmental awareness workshops for administrators;
- Produces educational materials for distribution to students and teachers for classroom use;
- Reviews, evaluates and makes appropriate modifications for educational materials including curriculum materials for general distribution and presentation in schools;
- Plans and markets outdoor education programs and experiences for the general public;
- Coordinates interdepartmental educational activities;
- Designs and produces sound and/or slide presentations for public and department use;
- Supervises planning and development of special educational training programs including hunter and boating safety;
- Arranges publicity for environmental education activities to generate maximum public interest in environmental education;
- Develops educational exhibits for various units within department;
- Answers correspondence and information requests;
- Provides technical assistance in area of environmental education to school systems, other state agencies and nature centers;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Seven (7) years of professional employment in the field of education or training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in an environmental field such as biological sciences, conservation, earth sciences, ecology, environmental economics, environmental education, natural history, natural resources or pollution analysis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training in education or training may be substituted for the General experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's Degree in an environmental field as indicated above may be substituted for the Special Experience.
