PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic technical tasks and assisting professionals in wildlife biology.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Initially works under close supervision of a professional employee of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
- May lead permanent and/or seasonal employees and other assigned employees of lower grade.
- May oversee work of contractors or volunteers and in the Forest Management Division, fire crews.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Primarily performs basic technical functions in area of wildlife biology;
- Performs and leads data and sample or specimen collection activities for telemetry and/or population monitoring, habitat analysis, habitat development and manipulation and other functions performed in wildlife biology;
- Collects, compiles and prepares necessary data, samples or specimens for professional analysis, research studies or special projects;
- Operates equipment as required;
- Assures proper and safe handling by work crews of animals, equipment and tools used;
- Assures when applicable contract requirements met;
- Repairs or recommends repair of tools and equipment as needed;
- May perform and lead or oversee crews in such activities as banding of birds, vegetation collection and planting brush cutting and animal trapping and transfer;
- May be required to collect information and provide technical assistance for wildlife complaints;
- May issue permits for handling wildlife;
- Prepares basic reports and correspondence as needed;
- May prepare visual materials such as maps and graphs;
- May conduct basic tours or instructional sessions and assist in developing educational materials or programs;
- May perform basic statistical analysis under direct professional supervision;
- May perform data entry;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- basic principles, practices and techniques of wildlife biology including species identification, monitoring, collection, diet, disease, disease diagnosis, marking techniques, habitat maintenance, ecology, major plant identification, measurement and care and handling;
- basic nuisance control practices;

- perform basic calculations in preparation for analysis and planning functions;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of technical experience in wildlife biology, primarily involving functions such as sampling, data collection, data compilation, boating operations and education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in an environmental science with related courses in wildlife biology may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must be willing and able to accept assignment or transfer to any area of the state.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a standard first aid certificate and perform emergency first aid as needed.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to live on or near work site.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from on-site field conditions and a moderate degree of discomfort from year-round weather conditions.
