PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut this class is accountable for establishing communication with neighborhood individuals and/or groups and conducting adult and/or youth educational programs for neighborhood families, groups and youths.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Cooperative Extension System professional or an employee of higher grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Establishes effective communications between community and the service relating to program activities;
  • Identifies problem areas which require educational programs;
  • Conducts educational programs for groups of adults and/or youth providing information on full range of resources available to them;
  • Assists with counseling and training of volunteers or trainees;
  • Coordinates data for required reports;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of home economics nutrition and/or youth development and community resources utilized in family living programs;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communications skills;
  • Ability to
    • identify problems related to improving quality of family living;
    • work with groups in an educational capacity as well as with individuals in a counseling capacity;
    • assess client problems;
    • lead volunteers and trainees;
    • establish and maintain cooperative relationships as a member of a program team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalency and two (2) years of experience in family living programs, youth programs, or related areas involving community groups
