PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Administrative Services, State Fleet Operations this class is accountable for supervising the maintenance and repair operations of four or more statewide garages.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade within Fleet Operations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises employees engaged in the repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff;
- Provides staff training and assistance;
- Conducts performance evaluations;
- Determines priorities and plans unit work;
- Establishes and maintains unit procedures;
- Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards;
- Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- Prepares reports and correspondence;
- Periodically inspects vehicles, premises and equipment to determine condition;
- Prepares work orders;
- Reviews labor and materials reports;
- Writes specifications for service contracts with private contractors;
- Reviews work performed by private contractors;
- Supervises vehicle recall operations;
- Orders supplies and equipment;
- Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials;
- Advises state agencies regarding acceptable equipment and supplies;
- Participates in safety meetings; reviews repair garage reports and records;
- Maintains paperwork generated from in-house warranty and vehicle campaigns;
- Monitors emissions testing program within fleet;
- Performs related duties as required.

- inspect and test new and repaired overhauled passenger vehicles and shop repair equipment including welding and cutting equipment, automotive testing equipment and standard machine tools;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in the repair, maintenance, inspection and testing of passenger vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Maintenance Supervisor 1 (Automotive).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in auto mechanics may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate’s degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
