PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner this class is accountable for performing the basic technical duties related to autopsy and postmortem medicolegal death investigations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Initially works under the close supervision of the Forensic Technician Supervisor or other employee of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead employees of lower grade as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Under supervision prepares bodies for autopsies and subsequent release to funeral directors;
  • Assists in performance of autopsies and collection of relevant information;
  • Assists in removal and dissection of organs, collection of body fluids and retention of specimens for special studies;
  • Prepares fixative solutions;
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of autopsy facilities and equipment;
  • Assists in maintenance of appropriate records;
  • Picks up decomposed and traumatized bodies;
  • Takes inventory of and makes receipt for clothing and valuables;
  • Maintains chain of custody of body and evidence from crime scenes;
  • May take fingerprints and photographs;
  • May assist in removal of bodies from hospitals and/or secured crime scene areas;
  • May take and develop X-rays;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in related work in a morgue, laboratory, hospital or funeral home.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel. Incumbents must be available for calls on an emergency basis.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class will be required to lift bodies; will be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
