PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Aging and Disability Services this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in evaluating, instructing and licensing persons with physical disabilities requiring special equipment in order to operate a motor vehicle.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Driver Training Program Consultant or other employee of higher grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Visits residence of each applicant for a Motor Vehicle driver's license with a physical disability;
- Checks vision, determines physical strength and mobility of limbs, ascertains ability to transfer in and out of vehicle;
- Reviews medications prescribed and physical conditions (spasms, etc.) which might preclude driving;
- Conducts individualized training in specially-equipped vehicle;
- Upon completion of training, conducts written and oral test, completes required forms and collects fee;
- Conducts inspection of specially-equipped vehicles for drivers with physical disabilities;
- Performs eye tests, road and/or written re-examinations;
- Investigates complaints of misuse of handicapped parking permits;
- Completes forms and submits reports;
- Conducts special investigations as assigned;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of parts, equipment and operation of motor vehicles and mechanical and/or adaptive equipment required by a driver with a physical disability;
- Knowledge of
- motor vehicle laws and regulations;
- physical disabilities and effect upon motor vehicle operation;
- driver training instruction;
- Considerable
- interpersonal skills;

- Considerable ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to conduct road tests and analyze applicant performance;

- conduct investigations and prepare written reports;
- utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience in the repair of motor vehicles, driving instruction or in related investigative or regulatory work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- At time of appointment incumbents must also possess a motor vehicle driving record satisfactory to the Commissioner of Aging and Disability Services.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury, which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
- Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate amount of physical exertion inspecting vehicles and assisting applicants, to some degree of injury from conducting road tests and occasionally to moderately disagreeable conditions.
