PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Workers' Compensation Commission this class is accountable for performing the most complex tasks in making verbatim records and transcripts of complex and difficult formal hearings and coordinating office activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead Hearing Reporter 1's and other lower level clerical employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinates office workflow; 
  • Records verbatim testimony during formal hearings; 
  • Maintains accurate records of exhibits; 
  • Prepares and types transcripts; 
  • Schedules hearings or official actions and types and issues notices; 
  • Assembles and maintains records and files; 
  • Acts as a liaison with the public, other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding agency policies and procedures; 
  • Maintains or oversees maintenance of office records and logs; 
  • Prepares correspondence and memoranda; 
  • Prepares reports; 
  • Types a variety of materials; 
  • May take and transcribe dictation; 
  • May perform certain business activities such as purchasing supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory and petty cash or assisting in budget preparation; 
  • May operate personal computers or other electronic equipment; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • office systems and procedures; 
    • formal hearing procedures and terminology; 
  • Considerable skill and accuracy in taking dictation under difficult circumstances at the rate of 175 words per minute; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to
    • read, understand and apply policies, procedures, statutes and regulations; 
    • type at a net speed of 50 words per minute.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of stenographic experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have included taking dictation during formal hearings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • Graduation from a one (1) year court reporting or court stenography program at a business institute may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
  • One (1) year as a Hearing Reporter 1 may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
