PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services major hospital this class is accountable for planning, organizing and supervising the patient work program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the limited supervision of a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead Mental Health Assistants and Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants in the direction of patient activities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Responsible for care and handling of a large patient workforce including those on payroll;
- Assigns individual patients to various work groups taking into account patient level of social competence and work tolerance, therapeutic needs and hospital work load;
- Consults with and apprises medical personnel (including doctors, nursing and social services personnel, department heads and others) of patient behavior during work assignments and their fitness for a particular duty or rehabilitation;
- Checks patient workers in and out of residence halls;
- Makes daily rounds of wards with doctors as required;
- Maintains various records for patient workers including payroll records, clothing, materials, tools, etc.;
- Prepares accident and other reports;
- May conduct patient work programs;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- principles and practices of remotivation techniques and related clinical activities;
- patient job requirements for hospital departments utilizing patient workers;
- Knowledge of suitability of individual patients for hospital work programs as indicated by patient behavior patterns;
- Considerable interpersonal skills;
- Ability to process and maintain patient records such as payroll and accident reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience as a Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant 2 or its equivalent.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive patients.
