PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Correction, Education Division, this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the development of job and life skills and transition services for inmates.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a State School Principal or employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Provides instruction to
inmates in areas of job skills development, educational placement and programs
and transition services;
- Arranges for inmates to
participate in college courses;
- Tracks inmate progress;
- Develops job skills for
assigned group of inmates;
- Participates in career
planning and development;
- Assists with job
training;
- Provides life skills instruction;
- Evaluates inmate's
abilities, skills, interests and vocational aptitudes and matches with job compatibility;
- Provides developmental
direction to inmates in areas of education and vocational planning;
- Analyzes demographic and
program information;
- Provides information
about occupations, job and training opportunities and support services
available in the community;
- Coordinates within the
community job opportunities and assists in transition within the community;
- Identifies and develops
community resources;
- Provides instruction in
resume writing, interviewing skills and utilization of computer software;
- Maintains case records;
- Provides one-on-one and
small group tutorial assistance;
- Analyzes and interprets
computer generated reports;
- May prepare narrative
and statistical reports;
- Performs related duties
as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in career development, placement and/or counseling, educational guidance counseling or vocational counseling.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training may be
substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester
hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4)
years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's degree in
rehabilitation counseling, vocational or educational guidance or a closely
related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
- Successful completion of
a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by the Department of
Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class are required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigationand fingerprinting of each candidate will be made prior to appointment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates.
