PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the execution, planning, design, analysis, and coordination of landscape architectural work pertaining to transportation programs and projects, including roads, highways, bridges and transportation facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Transportation Supervising Landscape Architect or an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead Landscape Designer 1s and other employees of lower grade as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Develops landscape architectural plans, specifications, and estimates for transportation programs and projects including roads, highways, bridges and transportation facilities;
  • Assists in preparing designs that may include reforestation, landscape buffers, vegetation management, pollinator habitats, environmental systems, water quality treatments, urban forestry or green infrastructure;
  • Performs detailed field investigations and assists in compiling data and analyzing site conditions such as topography, soils, hydraulics, existing vegetation, wetlands, invasive species, traffic, pedestrian or bicycle circulation, land use regulations, maintenance conditions, and natural and cultural resources;
  • Assists in the review of complex projects affecting natural or cultural resources;
  • Develops visual graphics, colored renderings and 3D models;
  • Performs material testing of landscape materials including plants, nursery stock supplies, and soils;
  • Inspects landscape related contract work to ensure conformance with contract plans and specifications;
  • Investigates complaints and may recommend solutions;
  • Prepares technical reports and keeps records;
  • May review work performed by consultants or contractors related to landscape architecture;
  • May provide staff training and assistance;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • the principles and practices of landscape architecture;
    • soils, horticulture, ecology, planting, seeding and landscape materials;
    • the methods, materials, equipment and tests used in landscape design and maintenance;
    • sight lines, clear zone, and water quality practices;
    • guidelines related to pedestrian accessibility;
  • Knowledge of
    • historic preservation, community development, and land use;
    • environmental goals and applicable solutions involving landscape architecture;
    • contract bid package components; 
    • site planning, including roads, highways and transportation facilities;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • prepare and review plans, specifications and estimates;
    • analyze problems and recommend effective solutions;
    • utilize computer software including CADD and visualization tools;
    • make presentations;
    • keep records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in a professional landscape architecture capacity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training in landscape architecture or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master’s degree in landscape architecture may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

  • The classification of Transportation Landscape Designer 2 is assigned to Salary Group LS 24a.
  • Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group LS 25.
  • The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan IE in CORE-CT.
