PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for performing landscape architecture work in the execution, planning, design, analysis and coordination involving transportation projects.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Transportation Supervising Landscape Architect or an employee of higher grade in the performance of routine tasks; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs a limited range of related duties in the development of landscape architectural plans, specifications, and estimates for transportation projects;
  • Assists in performing field investigations, compiling data related to topography, soils, hydraulics, existing vegetation, wetlands, invasive species, traffic, pedestrian or bicycle circulation, land use, maintenance conditions, and natural resources;
  • Assists in developing visual graphics and colored renderings;
  • Assists in performing material testing of landscape materials including plants, nursery stock supplies, and soils;
  • Assists in inspecting landscape related contract work to ensure conformance with contract plans and specifications;
  • May compile data, prepare reports and/or keep records;
  • May work on special design projects;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • the principles and practices of landscape architecture;
    • soils, horticulture, ecology, planting, seeding, and landscape materials;
    • the methods, materials, equipment and tests used in landscape design and maintenance;
    • guidelines related to pedestrian accessibility;
    • site planning, including roads, highways and transportation facilities;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • interpret plans and specifications;
    • utilize computer software including CADD and visualization tools;
    • keep records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in a professional landscape architecture capacity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in landscape architecture or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
