PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the receipt, processing, and distribution of mail.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of an employee of higher grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Mail Handler;
- Sorts, distributes, and routes incoming and interoffice mail;
- Weighs and operates automatic postage application equipment, scales, mail inserters, and related mail equipment;
- Loads and unloads mail vehicles, tray sacks, or carts of mail;
- Picks up and delivers mail;
- May be required to open and inspect mail;
- May sign for mail;
- May drive state vehicles;
- Performs related duties as required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
APPOINTMENT
This class is established to permit agencies to recruit and train employees in mail handling skills. An employee may be appointed to this class for a period not to exceed one (1) year. The employee may not remain as a Mail Handler Trainee for more than one (1) year from the date of original appointment. No exceptions or extensions beyond the one (1) year will be granted.
