PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Public Health, Tumor Registry section and the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health section this class is accountable for reviewing, classifying and coding medical and demographic data.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level clerical or other employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH:
- Abstracts and codes cancer records submitted to the Tumor Registry from state, federal and private hospitals and participating out of state hospitals;
- Reviews and interprets patient histories and diagnostic reports, x-ray reports, lab findings, pathology reports, discharge summaries and autopsy reports;
- For each tumor prepares a separate code sheet classifying specific information on newly diagnosed cancer cases;
- Codes demographic information;
- Prepares Inquiry Requests to be sent to hospitals for incomplete information on specific cases;
- Reviews cancer follow up records and adjusts permanent coding sheets as necessary for such items as extent of disease and additional therapy;
- In the event of patient death requests official death certificate in order to correctly identify and code cause of death and autopsy information;
- Attends monthly in house coding conferences to discuss difficult cases and coding problems and to receive ongoing training in coding procedures;
- May enter and retrieve data on computerized recordkeeping system;
- Performs related duties as required.
DEPARTMENT OF LABOR:
- Abstracts and codes occupational injury and illness records submitted by private and public sector employers;
- Reviews and interprets narrative reports of occupational injuries and illnesses and codes case characteristic data and demographic information;
- Prepares follow up information forms and may contact employers by telephone in cases of incomplete information;
- Attends coding conferences to receive ongoing training in coding procedures;
- May enter and retrieve data on computerized recordkeeping system;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience performing medical coding duties or two (2) years of clerical experience in a medical office or tumor registry section of a general hospital or the Department of Public Health.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in medical secretarial work may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
