PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In state laboratories this class is accountable for conducting routine chemical, hematological, bacteriological, histological and microscopic analyses and examinations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Performs basic tasks independently; works under the close supervision of a Medical Technologist 2, Lead Medical Technologist or other employee of higher grade when performing more advanced tasks.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise laboratory personnel of lower grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Conducts routine chemical and microscopic tests and examinations of blood specimens including tests such as hemoglobin estimations, complete red, white, differential and other counts, sedimentation rates, hematocrit and related blood tests;
  • Conducts chemical and microscopic analyses of blood specimens for sugar, uric acid, creatinine, bilirubin, total protein, calcium, phosphorus and other related tests;
  • Prepares cultures of specimens for pathogenic bacteria;
  • Prepares reports of tests and examinations;
  • Prepares reports and maintains records;
  • May analyze blood for presence of sickle cell anemia and thalassemia and traits of these disorders;
  • May test urine samples for glucose, protein, urobilinogen and other substances;
  • May obtain blood samples from clients for examinations;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years' professional experience involving scientific work in a state or federally regulated clinical laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training in biology, chemistry, medical technology or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of employment to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in biology, chemistry, medical technology or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
  • Successful completion of a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must be willing to periodically undergo tests or immunizations for communicable diseases.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
