PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In state laboratories this class is accountable for independently performing the full range of chemical, hematological, bacteriological, histological and microscopic analyses.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Lead Medical Technologist or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead/supervise Medical Technologists 1 and other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Conducts the full range of chemical and microscopic tests and examinations of blood, urine, feces, gastric contents, spinal and other body fluids, exudates and transudates;
- Makes additional chemical analyses of blood and other body fluids in order to measure levels of bilirubin, total protein, A/G ratio, calcium, phosphorus, chlorides, plus acid, and alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol and esters, special liver function tests, serum analyses and other examinations as required;
- Prepares standard and special culture media, stains and reagents, sensitivity cultures and other special bacteriological procedures;
- Prepares reports of tests and examinations;
- May review the work of Medical Technologists and other laboratory personnel and assists them with the more difficult test interpretations;
- May obtain blood specimens from clients for examinations;
- May analyze blood samples for presence of sickle cell anemia and thalassemia and traits of these disorders;
- May cross match blood for transfusions, antibody screening and blood grouping and typing;
- May give lectures and perform laboratory demonstrations;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of professional experience involving scientific work in a state or federally regulated clinical laboratory.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training in biology, chemistry, medical technology or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's degree in biology, chemistry, medical technology or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must be willing to periodically undergo tests or immunizations for communicable diseases.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
