PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of
Mental Health and Addiction Services this class is accountable for directing
the psychiatric residency training program in a major department hospital or
facility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative or executive direction
from the Mental Health Superintendent or other administrator of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directs staff physicians assigned to the
training of residents; may have administrative supervision over training
supervisors in other disciplines.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Directs staff and
operations of psychiatric residency training program;
- Coordinates, plans and
manages program activities;
- Formulates program goals
and objectives;
- Develops or assists in
development of related policy;
- Interprets and administers
pertinent laws;
- Evaluates staff;
- Prepares or assists in
preparation of the program budget;
- Maintains contacts with
individuals both within and outside of program who might impact activities;
- Recruits and selects
candidates for residency training and assigns their duties in proper rotation;
- Develops and administers
preceptorships, seminars and journal clubs for training of residents;
- Obtains intramural and
visiting lecturers;
- Supervises, teaches and
rates progress of residents and grades performance;
- Selects affiliating
placements;
- Supervises and controls
other hospital training programs including continuing medical education;
- Leads the recruitment and
hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
- May supervise individual
residents in therapy;
- Performs related duties
as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge
of
- principles and practices of medicine with
particular reference to diagnosis and treatment of mentally disturbed clients;
- recent developments in field of psychiatry;
- principles and practices of professional
teaching;
- Knowledge of and ability
to apply management principles and practices;
- Considerable
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of
experience in a hospital or clinic as a staff psychiatrist.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must
have included the supervision of training programs for psychiatric residents.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class
must possess and retain a license to practice medicine and surgery in
Connecticut. A temporary license may be granted for a period not to exceed one
(1) year.
- Incumbents in this class
must be certified as a specialist in psychiatry by the American Board of
Psychiatry and Neurology.
