PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the State Library or Department of Economic and Community Development, Division of Culture this class is accountable for performing the most complex tasks in curatorial work in the research, documentation, conservation and exhibition of major historical museum collections.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Museum Curator 1, Museum Assistants and guides as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs the most complex curatorial duties in a museum collection; 
  • Researches historical collections to determine origin, age and value; 
  • Documents historical artifacts and identifies their relevance to Connecticut history; 
  • Determines need for restoration work on historical and artistic collections; 
  • Accessions, registers and catalogs collection items and new acquisitions; 
  • Maintains master log and other records systems; 
  • Plans and designs collection exhibits; 
  • Supervises and trains staff; 
  • May subcontract for necessary professional preservation services; 
  • May prepare grants for funding; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • American history with particular reference to social, cultural and technological trends as reflected in museum collections and themes; 
    • methods used in cataloging, preservation, restoration and storage of historic collections; 
  • Knowledge of basic research materials; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Considerable ability to
    • perform historic research; 
    • to prepare exhibits of museum collections;
  • Ability to utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of professional museum experience with responsibility for preservation and exhibition of historical museum collections.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been performing curatorial work at or above the level of a Museum Curator 1.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in American history, American studies, archaeology, art history, museum studies or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
