PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Banking (DOB) this class is accountable for directing an office responsible for exercising independent oversight over student loan matters and advocacy for the rights of borrowers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Reviews and attempts to resolve student loan borrower complaints;
  • Assists student loan borrowers in understanding their rights and responsibilities;
  • Compiles and analyzes student loan borrower complaint data;
  • Provides information to various stakeholders about borrowers’ concerns;
  • Performs related duties as required. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • and ability to apply management principles and practices; 
    • and ability to interpret and apply relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; 
    • services and supports related to student loan matters; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to use computers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The Ombudsperson shall have expertise and experience in a student loan-related field. 

APPOINTMENT

Appointed by the Commissioner of Banking in accordance with the provisions of Connecticut General Statutes Section 36a-25.
