PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In state facilities this class is accountable for the supervision of an occupational therapy program.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

In a facility which has no Director of Rehabilitation Therapies, this class has programmatic and administrative responsibility for a therapy program. Supervision of other employees is not necessary, provided there is supervision of a program in the absence of a Director. There may be only (1) supervisor for an occupational therapy program. Where used in a supervisory capacity, this class must supervise at least two (2) filled professional therapist positions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of the Director of Rehabilitation Therapies, Director of Residential Programs or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May supervise Occupational Therapists, Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapy students and staff in other therapy disciplines.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans, directs, and/or contributes to planning and directing of an occupational therapy program used to provide individuals with habilitation/ rehabilitation activities;
  • Develops diagnostic tools and administrative procedures for occupational therapy department;
  • Supervises and instructs staff and intern therapists in occupational therapeutic techniques and implementation of various procedures;
  • Provides in-service training; supervises therapy staff and reviews their reports;
  • Conducts or participates in case conferences, individual study meetings or clinics to provide consultation to attending physician and other therapeutic disciplines regarding individual level of functioning, treatment plans and progress;
  • Attends training conferences and lectures on occupational therapy and related topics;
  • Develops and maintains reporting and recording procedures for individual care and administrative matters;
  • Prepares and maintains reports on individual diagnosis, treatment and progress;
  • Maintains inventories and orders supplies and equipment;
  • May act for Director of Rehabilitation Therapies in their absence;
  • May assign individuals to activity groups;
  • May supervise related therapy areas;
  • May meet with other department heads to coordinate occupational therapy with other programs in facility or hospital;
  • May develop occupational therapy policies and procedures;
  • May prepare occupational therapy department budget;
  • May conduct occupational therapy staff meetings to discuss clinical and administrative issues;
  • May maintain liaison with local and state agencies for continuance of vocational and educational training of discharged individuals;
  • May make home visits and/or transport and escort individuals off grounds;
  • May represent the occupational therapy department by speaking to community groups;
  • May make adaptive equipment;
  • May serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional (QIDP);
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • principles and practices of occupational therapy;
    • anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, neurology, neuroanatomy and individual group dynamics as applied to occupational therapy;
    • physical and/or intellectual disorders;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Skills
    • application of occupational therapy techniques skills;
    • instructing others in occupational therapy techniques skills;
  • Ability to
    • gain interest, cooperation and confidence of individuals;
    • utilize computer software;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience as an Occupational Therapist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain licensure as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Connecticut.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
