PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut Health Center this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor of technical pharmacy support staff in the dispensing of prescription medication and monitor of controlled substances inventories.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class may be used in one or both of the following ways in a position:

  • As a working supervisor to technical pharmacy support staff.
  • Performs most complex tasks relative to pharmacy quality assurance and regulatory compliance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads Pharmacy Technicians and other lower level staff assigned to the pharmacy.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans pharmacy support staff workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work; 
  • Establishes and maintains pharmacy support staff procedures; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; 
  • Troubleshoots and reconciles service issues; 
  • Ensures all pharmacy technicians complete/obtain annual certification/registration; 
  • Monitors and participates in maintaining staff competencies; 
  • Assists in maintaining regulatory readiness; 
  • Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Participates in ensuring pharmacy quality assurance standards are maintained and safety related policies and procedures are implemented and followed; 
  • Ensures proper receipt and inventory for controlled substances; 
  • Analyzes daily Compare Report to ensure accurate receipt to designated location; 
  • Investigates all controlled substance discrepancy resolutions and non-resolutions; 
  • Prepares unresolved discrepancy reports; 
  • Monitors filing and storage/security access for controlled substance returns to C2Safe; 
  • Assists Pharmacist in Narcotic Drug Control management; 
  • Performs electronic reconciliation of drug receipt, e.g. 340B program; 
  • Reviews prescription charges for accuracy; 
  • Performs Pharmacy Technician duties; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of 
    • principles and practices of pharmacy operations; 
    • pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing and record keeping of medications; 
    • basic chemistry; 
    • documentation, quality assurance and security requirements of accrediting bodies; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to 
    • perform mathematical calculations; 
    • identify drugs, drug dosages, routes of administration, dosage forms and storage requirements; 
    • utilize computer software; 
    • resolve conflict and mediate; 
  • Some supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program and three (3) years of experience working as a registered Pharmacy Technician in an acute care hospital or long-term care facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

One (1) year of experience in a hospital setting at the level of a Pharmacy Technician may be substituted for the completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain a certification as a Pharmacy Technician issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) in accordance with C.G.S. Sec 20-598a.
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain CT Pharmacy Technician registration with the Department of Consumer Protection.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class must be able to stand and/or walk for assigned shift; may have exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions and may be required to do some lifting.
