In the Departments of Children and Families, Development Services, Mental Health and Addiction Services, the University of Connecticut and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities this class accountable for directing all physical plant operations.
Physical Plant Operations includes:
DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES, assignment includes the oversight of Southbury Training School.
DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION SERVICES, assignment includes the oversight of Connecticut Valley Hospital.
Receives administrative or executive direction from the facility head, administrative officer or other employee of higher grade.
Directs employees in each of the following categories: Levels A, B, C and subordinate classes in Level D. (See Addendum)
Nine (9) years of technical experience in the maintenance and repair of large buildings and utility services.
NOTE: Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.
Three (3) years of the General Experience must have been in a first-line supervisory capacity responsible for the direction of a large crew of trades workers, contractors or similar highly skilled maintenance specialists above the apprentice level.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Maintenance Supervisor 2.
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

DEFINITION OF INSTITUTION TYPE
MAJOR STATE INSTITUTION:
Encompasses a wide variety of large trade shops and very complex building utilities (power plant, wastewater treatment plant, etc.). Staff is large (usually 51-150 workers) and highly skilled. There is a heavy layer (usually 10-20) of subordinate administrative/supervisory personnel (Level D) and crew leaders and supervisors (Level C). Buildings are spread over a large area and provide a variety of services (e.g., cafeterias, auditoriums, armories, residence halls, administration buildings, classrooms, gymnasiums, hospitals, airport facilities, etc.).
LARGE STATE INSTITUTION:
Encompasses a wide variety of trade shops and complex building utilities (wastewater treatment plant, power plant, etc.). Staff size is moderate (usually 26-50) and is highly skilled. There is a layer (usually 4-10) of subordinate crew leaders and supervisors (Level C). Buildings are spread over a large area and provide a variety of services (e.g., cafeteria, auditoriums, residence halls, administration buildings, classrooms, gymnasiums, hospitals, etc.).
MODERATE-SIZED STATE INSTITUTION:
Encompasses a variety of small trade shops and basic building utilities (power plant and possibly a small wastewater treatment plant). Staff is small to moderate (usually 15-25) and is primarily skilled/semiskilled with a core of highly skilled workers. There is a thin layer (usually 1-3) of subordinate crew leaders and supervisors (Level C). Buildings are spread out and provide a variety of services (e.g., cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, residence halls, administration buildings, classrooms, hospitals, etc.).

LEVEL B - HIGHLY SKILLED WORKERS WITH SOME POSSIBLE ON-LINE SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

LEVEL C - CREWLEADERS AND SUPERVISORS
EXAMPLES: Maintenance Supervisor 1 and 2; Lead Stationary Engineer; Supervising Stationary Engineer; Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor 1 and 2; Building Superintendent 1, 2, and 3, Lead Custodian, Supervising Custodian
LEVEL D - MANAGERIAL/DIRECTOR
