PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising an accounts examination unit or function.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This is a supervisory level class having full time supervisory responsibility for an examination unit of three (3) or more professional Examiners; work may be internal or external, conducted in the field or office.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from an Accounting Manager, Fiscal/ Administrative Manager, or employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises accounts examination and other staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews the work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans unit work; 
  • Establishes and maintains unit procedures; 
  • Develops or make recommendations on the development of policies and standards; 
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Reviews audit reports for conformance with policies and regulations; 
  • May conduct hearings or conferences with those audited; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Eight (8) years of experience in accounting or auditing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been performing the most complex accounting function or acting in a lead or consultative capacity at the level of an Associate Accountant or an Associate Accounts Examiner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training in accounting or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree
  • A Master's degree in accounting may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
