PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in inspecting public transit vehicles and the facilities and equipment of operators for compliance with state laws and regulations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Inspects public transit vehicles including buses, vans, taxis, and limousines for highway safety and minimum vehicle specifications;
- Inspects facilities and equipment of bus, taxi, and livery companies for conformance to safety and service standards;
- Examines vehicle maintenance records;
- Investigates complaints concerning public transit;
- Inspects proposed street routes of bus operators;
- Conducts meetings with company representatives;
- Maintains files of accidents involving public transit vehicles;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in the repair, maintenance, or inspection of motor vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the inspection or repair of school buses, transit buses, or motor coaches.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in auto mechanics including diesel powered vehicles may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury and disagreeable conditions as a result of inspecting facilities and vehicles.
