PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state facility this class is accountable for providing neuropsychological assessment and treatment to clients of the facility or program, as well as consultation to professional staff regarding evaluation, management, and treatment of individuals with suspected or confirmed neurological or neurobehavioral conditions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from the Director of Psychological Services or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead psychology staff, postdoctoral fellows, interns and students; may functionally supervise direct care staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans, develops, implements and coordinates neuropsychological services program; 
  • Determines priorities and plans program work; 
  • Conducts assessments, treatments, evaluations and consultations on complex assessment cases or those which there may be a neurological, neuropsychological, or neurobehavioral component requiring specialized neuropsychological evaluations; 
  • Acts as a liaison with clinical teams, psychiatrists, psychologists, primary care providers, and unit staff to convey recommendations and provide education related to specific patient assessment or management needs; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence;
  • May develop and provide individualized and/or group cognitive remediation services; 
  • May provide training, education and clinical supervision to program/facility psychologists, interns, and other staff members; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • neuropsychological assessment, including choosing and administering procedures and instruments, interpreting and reporting findings, and developing related recommendations and treatment plans; 
    • diagnostic neurological and neurobehavioral disorders; 
    • abnormal and clinical psychology and the intersection between psychiatric and neurological factors; 
    • psychological research design, data analysis and application of results;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Considerable ability to
    • develop and direct training programs; 
    • teach; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Doctorate degree in clinical psychology and three (3) years of post-doctoral experience as a licensed clinical psychologist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license to practice psychology in Connecticut. Any person employed by the State of Connecticut prior to July 1, 1985 with a title in the psychology series of the classified services shall be exempt from the above licensure requirements pursuant to Public Act 613, Section 119(c). For certain positions, the appointing authority may require State licensure.  
  • Incumbents in this class must have completed an American Psychological Association (APA) approved internship, including a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology; or have obtained board certification (or proof of current eligibility for board certification) in Neuropsychology (through the American Board of Professional Psychology/American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABPP-ABCN) or American Board of Professional Neuropsychology (ABN)).  
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. § 1320a-7b(f). 
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language. 
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
