PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in a specific trade area.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to perform as a Qualified Craft Worker in a specific trade. The class is designed so that an incumbent will be assigned increasingly difficult and skilled tasks to perform under close supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under the close supervision of employees of higher grade to whom the on-the-job training or supervision has been delegated.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in specification for the class of Qualified Craft Worker;
  • Receives on-the-job training to supplement prior vocational or technical training in respective trade area;
  • Performs increasingly difficult and skilled tasks requiring application of trade skills, codes and standard trade practices under supervision;
  • Assists in estimating time, personnel and material needs on assigned projects;
  • Assists in maintenance of necessary records, logs, etc.;
  • Performs duties related to trade or similar trade areas as required;
  • At state owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations;
  • May be required to assist in snow removal operations during emergency situations;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in the respective maintenance trade area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in automotive, plumbing, construction, electrical, HVAC or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

APPOINTMENT

This class is intended to permit agencies to recruit and train employees for the class of Qualified Craft Worker. An employee may be appointed to this class for a period normally not to exceed two (2) years.
