PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the University of Connecticut this class is accountable for assisting in the operation, maintenance and repair of assigned research vessels and for acting as pilot and/or engineer as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Research Vessel Captain or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead crew members, trades workers, and maintenance personnel as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • On large research vessels, assumes responsibility for the inspection, maintenance and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; 
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots electronic navigation systems including global positioning systems and radar; 
  • Maintains an adequate stock of supplies for emergency repairs; 
  • On smaller research vessels, acts as ship's pilot, navigating and commanding assigned ships; 
  • Constructs and repairs research apparatus; 
  • Keeps records and prepares reports; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of engines and ancillary equipment of powered vessels; 
  • Knowledge of all types of navigational equipment;
  • Skills

    • oral and written communication skills;
    • in operating machine shop equipment; 
  • Ability to
    • repair and construct equipment as needed; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel engine inboard motor vessels operating both in offshore and coastal waters.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including a U.S. Coast Guard license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and to discomfort from extreme weather conditions, noise and fumes.
