PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising Rehabilitation Therapists and staff or administration of a professional habilitation/rehabilitation therapy program for individuals with physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability in a state facility or institution.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class may be used in the following ways:
  • In a facility that has no Director or Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 2, this class has programmatic and administrative responsibility for a therapy program. Supervision of other employees is not necessary, provided there is supervision of a program in the absence of a Director or Supervisor 2. There may be only one supervisor for the rehabilitation program.
  • When there is a Director or Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 2, this class must supervise two or more filled professional therapist positions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 2, Director of Rehabilitation Therapies or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May supervise therapists, Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants and/or other paraprofessional students or interns; may supervise staff in other therapy disciplines.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans, directs and/or contributes to planning and directing of rehabilitation/habilitation therapy programs;
  • Develops diagnostic tools and administrative policies and procedures for application of a therapeutic function;
  • Provides in-service training;
  • Assesses individuals level of functioning;
  • Conducts individual or small group activities;
  • Conducts and/or participates in clinics and case conferences providing consultation to attending physician or other discipline representatives regarding individuals level of functioning, treatment plans and progress;
  • Makes referrals to their disciplines for further individual assessment;
  • Prepares and maintains reports of individuals diagnosis, treatment and progress;
  • Maintains and orders supplies and equipment;
  • Participates in rehabilitation therapy staff meetings to discuss clinical and administrative issues;
  • May maintain liaison with local and state agencies for continuance of habilitation/rehabilitation therapy upon individual discharge;
  • May make home visits;
  • May participate in ad hoc committee meetings;
  • May represent rehabilitation therapy department by speaking to community groups;
  • May transport and escort individuals;
  • May supervise and instruct staff and intern therapists in new techniques and implementation of therapeutic procedures;
  • May act for Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 2 in their absence;
  • May supervise therapists and review their reports;
  • May meet with other discipline heads and/or department heads to coordinate specific therapy programs with other programs in facility;
  • May make adaptive equipment;
  • May serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • principles and practices of a designated therapeutic discipline;
    • physical, intellectual and/or psychosocial disorders;
  • Knowledge of
    • community services;
    • individual and group dynamics;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Skill in instructing and supervising in practice of specific therapeutic disciplines;
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of professional experience in a recognized professional therapeutic discipline providing program evaluation, planning and application for individual with an intellectual disability and/or physical disabilities.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted as one (1) year of experience at the level of Rehabilitation Therapist 2 or its equivalent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in a recognized therapeutic discipline such as art, dance, horticulture, music, recreation or other related therapeutic discipline may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a certificate in life saving (CPR, First Aid) from the American Red Cross.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury and to moderately disagreeable conditions while providing treatment to individuals.
