PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a retail store of a state agency or institution this class is accountable for selling, displaying, and performing customary duties of a retail sales clerk.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Initially works under the close supervision of an employee of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Displays merchandise; 
  • Assists customers in selecting merchandise; 
  • Operates cash register, including necessary opening and closing procedures; 
  • Receives payments or obtains credit authorizations; 
  • Checks identification of customer against payments by check; 
  • Prepares sales slips; 
  • Accepts returned merchandise; 
  • Prepares credit slips; 
  • Prepares inventories of stock; 
  • Prepares work orders to replenish merchandise; 
  • Checks merchandise against orders; 
  • Returns orders; 
  • Prices merchandise in accordance with instructions; 
  • Places merchandise on shelves; 
  • Maintains order and cleanliness; 
  • May requisition merchandise from stock room; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift light to medium weights and/or to stand in tiring positions for extended periods of time.
