PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Portland Depot this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for the operation of the sawmill, including operating specialized sawmill equipment, filling orders, and maintaining stock and scheduling deliveries.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads Environmental Protection Maintainers and other employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinates sawmill workflow and determines priorities;
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews the work of staff;
  • Provides staff training and assistance;
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations;
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding sawmill policies and procedures;
  • Prepares reports and correspondence;
  • Performs highly skilled sawmill operations requiring the operation of specialized equipment and the application of industry standards;
  • Operates sawmill and associated equipment;
  • Inspects contract lumber delivered to the depot to determine quantity and quality and accepts or rejects delivery;
  • Keeps inventory of materials on hand and materials required for future needs;
  • Responsible for the preparation, loading, and shipping of lumber to field;
  • Performs general and preventive maintenance on all specialized sawmill equipment;
  • Supervises crew in the repair and maintenance of depot structures and grounds;
  • May make recommendations on policies or standards;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard equipment, tools, materials, methods, and practices of the sawmill trade;

    • evaluate logs and lumber in accordance with industry standards;
    • utilize computer software;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the operation of saw and sawmill equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be exposed to extreme weather conditions; may be required to regularly lift heavy weights; may be exposed to loud noise on a regular basis; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment.
