PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Bureau of Air Management this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the installation, maintenance, and modification of meteorological, telemetry, and air sampling equipment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an Environmental Protection Air Pollution Control Engineer or other employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lower level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Modifies, fabricates, calibrates, and trouble-shoots meteorological, telemetry, and air sampling equipment;
- Prepares equipment specifications, operation manuals, equipment calibration procedures, and technical reports;
- Selects monitoring sites;
- Prepares program specifications for data reduction and analysis programs;
- May attend public hearings or testify in court cases;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- chemical, electrical, and/or mechanical principles and techniques involved in the operation, calibration, and repair of meteorological, telemetry, and air pollution sampling equipment;
- electronic test equipment;
- Knowledge of
- air pollution control laws, rules, and regulations;
- basic laboratory techniques/procedures;

- equipment installation, repair, trouble-shooting, and modification techniques skills;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in the installation, calibration, operation and maintenance of chemical, mechanical and electronic equipment and instruments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in electronics, physics, chemistry, or engineering technology with courses in air pollution control or air sampling and monitoring may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate degree of injury or physical harm due to falls or lifting of heavy equipment or from dangerous fumes; may also be exposed to a moderate degree of discomfort from environmental conditions and equipment noise.
